There are cases in which pipeline maintenance or rehabilitation via a single method. Hybrid lining systems have been developed for these situations. Pipe lining, such as CIPP lining, can solve a myriad of structural and flow issues. However, in cases where standard methods cannot be utilised. This may be due to extensive damage, issues with the surrounding environment, or a diameter of pipe too large for other options. As with all of our services, we aim to implement our solutions without excavation whenever possible. This option of a hybrid system benefits our clients. It causes vastly less damage to the affected area, and results in a faster turnaround time.

Hybrid systems are bespoke solutions that use a combination of methods and materials to provide a solution for a specific project. They typically involve combinations of steel cages, rubber tube sections and CIPP lining. This process aims to combine the strengths of each material to provide a solution that can be relied on.

Our Service 

Solutions typically include a combination of one or more of the following:

  • Factory engineered steel cages in sections that can be fabricated in-situ; rigid or jacked against pipe wall.
  • Overlapping rubber tubes secured against host pipe.
  • CIPP liner constrained within steel or other cage system.

The Process

  • Prefabricate off site, in sections that can be safely hand carried through existing access chambers.
  • Bring to site in batches that can be installed within each working shift.
  • Set-up flow monitoring, early warning systems for flow and gas, outline safe system of work and rescue for pipe man entry.
  • Install all relevant layers working from:
    • The sewer wall in accordance with safe entry and exit requirements.
    • The chamber chosen in accordance with safe entry and exit requirements.

Requirements

  • Safe man entry and exit routes.
  • 6-8 hours’ site access; multiple shifts generally required depending on installation length.
  • Over-pumping / tankering for high flows.
  • 750mm – 3000mm diameter.

When to use hybrid systems and their benefits

  • Hybrid systems are only appropriate when conventional techniques have been ruled out and a no-dig solution is the only viable option. One of the major benefits of the method is the low thickness. This offers minimal reduction in the diameter of the host pipe. (Typically around 6% of the cross-sectional area.)
  • The steel and rubber sewer lining systems are frequently used temporarily. This can be for reinforcement or protection purposes. They ensure structural and hydraulic integrity. Especially when other works have a high risk of causing structural damage to the sewer. For example ,tunnelling or piling. They typically have a design life of 5 years and can be removed in sections. The sectional removal enables safe inspection of the host pipe. In turn, we can identify of any structural defects that may have occurred as early as possible. This allows for repairs before the remaining sections are removed.
  • Steel and CIPP lining combinations can have full design lives of 70 years plus. They are generally used to restrain or route a CIPP liner through major diameter changes, large voids or to facilitate a significant diameter reduction in a deep sewer with restricted access.
  • Lateral connections can be enabled with specially designed top hat systems.
